OrganizationNorthStar TeleSolutions is a privately held company that specializes in the management and support of voice, video, and data subscribers to nearly 100 telecom companies. Serving over 1.5 million end users across North America, NorthStar's software, Insite, helps service providers manage the customer experience in areas such as billing, software management, customer care and customer support. Developed from the ground up, Insite is both completely platform independent and database independent, ensuring flexibility for the future growth. NorthStar is a growing organization focused on providing exceptional customer service and next generation technology to their users.

Business Challenge

BusinessWith a rapidly growing customer base, NorthStar came to the realization that the rePORTAL system it had in place was no longer as effective as operational demands required. Insite requires an extensive range of reports accessing many different types of data, and reporting needs for NorthStar run the gamut of its operations. Some report types include basic work orders, service and subscriber reports and even complex financial reports showing revenue statistics or workflow management reports that yield a comprehensive overview of subscriber operations. Insite handles many types of data such as the personal credentials of the service providers' end users, modem configuration, customer billing, appointment scheduling, controls to enable or disable modems, invoicing, etc. Because of the increasing report volume it was producing, NorthStar had outgrown its original reporting solution. Noticing a rising number of limitations with the rePORTAL tool in conjunction with its expanding operations, NorthStar began searching for a replacement.

OrganizationNorthStar needed to establish an OEM relationship with a reporting tool for Insite that could integrate easily into the existing architecture. The tool would also need to provide a single sign-on feature so that end users could log-in only once to access all of their information directly from Insite. NorthStar sought a solution with advanced security that could be easily configured to match different levels of access with different levels of users. Additionally, NorthStar wanted a flexible solution that offered both report scheduling and ad hoc reporting to provide their users the ability to create new reports from scratch and modify existing reports independently, freeing up its developer resources.

JReport Solution

After evaluating a number of solutions, NorthStar determined that with its high performance capabilities, JReport would be the best fit for building advanced reporting into the Insite software. Insite works as a hosted solution for NorthStar's customers and JReport was able to be deployed within its datacenter, providing access to both internal and external users. Because of the advanced security provided by JReport, NorthStar was able to achieve the single sign-on mechanism it was looking for, giving users access to all of their data with only one log-in. JReport has page, column, row, and role based security settings making it simple for NorthStar to design custom access settings to its data.

Like Insite, JReport is Java based so the look and feel of the two products integrated seamlessly. JReport also provided the flexibility NorthStar was looking for when assessing reporting solutions. One example is JReport's ability to embed reports within reports. Users can simply click a button to call up historical report or ledger data and use it for analysis or link to real time reports via the JReport Console. JReport also provides unlimited user access to the report scheduling feature and ad hoc reporting functionality, two major selection criteria for NorthStar as Insite needed to set up hundreds of schedules within its application.

NorthStar has achieved many benefits in using JReport as Insite's reporting solution. JReport has helped to empower Insite end users to create their own new reports or make advanced modifications to existing reports with JReport's ad hoc feature. By giving NorthStar's end users the freedom to work with reports independently, not only is time to production reduced for the service providers, but more agile BI is achieved since outside resources from NorthStar don't need to be utilized as frequently. This has allowed the company to focus on other mission critical projects since time spent writing new custom reports and editing existing ones has decreased significantly. By deploying JReport, NorthStar was also able to enhance the quality of their customer experience, by improving end user ability to analyze data providing them timely access to all of the information that they need in the form of a highly visual and easily interpreted report.
