Charts

Charts organize and visualize data and make it easy for users to see comparisons, trends, and patterns in data. A chart in JReport Analysis is based on the data retrieved from database and represented by a report. It represents the report data in a visually straightforward form.

Chart Types and Elements

Chart types

JReport Analysis provides twelve predefined chart types for data representation. Each chart type has one or more sub-types. Two more types are added --- gauge and surface --- to types of the previous version.

Bar Chart

A bar chart illustrates comparisons between individual items. Categories are organized horizontally and values vertically. In a bar chart, each item is represented as a vertical column.

Type Sub-type Description
Bar Clustered Bar 2-D Clustered Bar. Displays and compares data values across categories.
Stacked Bar 2-D Stacked Bar. Displays individual data value contribution of a total across categories.
100% Stacked Bar 2-D 100% Stacked Bar. Displays the percentage of individual data value contribution of a total across categories.
Clustered Bar 3-D Clustered bar with 3-D visual effect.
Stacked Bar 3-D Stacked bar with 3-D visual effect.
100% Stacked Bar 3-D 100% stacked bar with 3-D visual effect.
Bar 3-D 3-D Bar. Displays and compares data values across categories and series.
Bench Chart

A bench chart is similar to a bar chart as it also illustrates comparisons among individual items. However, categories are organized vertically and values horizontally. In a bench chart, each data point is represented as a horizontal column.

Type Sub-type Description
Bench Clustered Bench 2-D Clustered Bench. Displays and compares data values across categories.
Stacked Bench 2-D Stacked Bench. Displays individual data value contribution of a total across categories.
100% Stacked Bench 2-D 100% Stacked Bench. Displays the percentage of individual data value contribution of a total across categories.
Clustered Bench 3-D Clustered bench with 3-D visual effect.
Stacked Bench 3-D Stacked bench with 3-D visual effect.
100% Stacked Bench 3-D 100% stacked bench with 3-D visual effect.
Bench 3-D 3-D Bench. Displays and compares data values across categories and series.
Line Chart

A Line chart illustrates trend or change over time or categories. In a line chart, a line links each data point in an individual series.

Type Sub-type Description
Line Line 2-D Line. Displays trend or change over time or categories.
Stacked Line 2-D Stacked Line. Displays the trend of individual data value contribution of a total over categories.
100% Stacked Line 2-D 100% Stacked Line. Displays the trend of the percentage of individual data value contribution of a total over categories.
Line 3-D Line with 3-D visual effect.
Area Chart

An Area chart illustrates the magnitude of change over time or categories. In an area chart, the area between the series’ line and the X-axis is filled with a color for that data series.

Type Sub-type Description
Area Area 2-D Area. Displays the trend of values over time or categories.
Stacked Area 2-D Stacked Area. Displays the trend of individual data value contribution of a total over categories.
100% Stacked Area 2-D 100% Stacked Area. Displays the trend of the percentage of individual data value contribution of a total over categories.
Area 3-D Area with 3-D visual effect.
Stacked Area 3-D Stacked area with 3-D visual effect.
100% Stacked Area 3-D 100% stacked area with 3-D visual effect.
Pie Chart

A Pie chart illustrates the percentage that each data item contributes to the total. In a pie chart, a whole circle is divided into pie-shaped segments, with each data series represented by a proportionally sized segment. A Pie chart is useful in emphasizing significant contribution.

Type Sub-type Description
Pie Clustered Pie 2-D Clustered Pie. Displays individual data value contribution of a total over time or categories.
Clustered Pie 3-D Clustered pie with 3-D visual effect.
Radar Char

A Radar chart illustrates and compares data values relative to a center point.

Type Sub-type Description
Radar Radar 2-D Radar. Displays and compares data values relative to a center point.
Gauge Chart

A Gauge chart represents a member or group’s performance in dashboard or a report. There are three levels defined in this chart. They are Normal, Alert and Error, which are respectively displayed as Green, Yellow and Red in the whole range.

Type Sub-type Description
Gauge Gauge Dial 2-D Dial gauge. Uses a dial type to show levels of Normal, Alert, Error and values in each level.
Gauge Bar 2-D Bar gauge. Uses a bar type to show levels of Normal, Alert, Error and values in each level.
Gauge Bubble 2-D Bubble gauge. Uses a bubble type to show levels of Normal, Alert, Error and values in each level.
Surface Chart

A Surface chart is used to indicate in which level the different values reside. It also shows the cross-relationship between category and series.

Type Sub-type Description
Surface Surface 3-D Surface with 3-D visual effect. Represents a large set of data in a continued surface view with different data ranged by different color.
Scatter Chart

A Scatter chart illustrates data that is composed of value pairs. The values within a pair can vary. In a Scatter chart, two measures are required.

Type Sub-type Description
Scatter Scatter 2-D Scatter. Compares two sets of values.
Scatter Straight Line 2-D Scatter with data points connected by straight lines.
Scatter Curved Line 2-D Scatter with data points connected by smoothed lines.
Bubble Chart

A Bubble chart also illustrates data that is composed of value pairs. However, a Bubble chart uses relative magnitude visualization. In a Bubble chart, three measures are required.

Type Sub-type Description
Bubble Bubble 2-D Bubble. Compares sets of three values. The third value is displayed as the size of the bubble marker.
Stock Chart

A Stock chart illustrates a series of data values at given times. With a stock chart, two, three or four measures are required.

Type Sub-type Description
Stock High-Low-Close 2-D High-Low-Close. Requires three series of values in this order.
Open-High-Low-Close 2-D Open-High-Low-Close. Requires four series of values in this order.
Combo Chart

A Combo chart is the combination of two types of charts. Before v7, there were three types of combo charts: Bar-Line, Line-Line, and Bar-Area. In v7, users can make a combo chart by combining 2D Bar, Bench, Line, and Area into one type as they wish. The chart format dialog takes a new look as shown below:

New Look of Chart Types

Some new features were developed in v7 to enhance the view of some chart types and styles.

2-D Bar with Depth

A fake 3D style, cannot be rotated, but appears cleaner.

2-D Types with Shadow

Chart types with 2-D visual effect present levels and depth in a flattened graph. When 2-D charts use shadows, the view is more professional.

Contour with Specified Pattern

You can specify the contour color and width of bars. The contour property is applied to the whole graph.

Graph with two patterns in wall and static hints on graph

Fill Chart Wall with Two Patterns

Filling the chart wall with two colors makes values easier to see at a glance.

2D Types with Static Hint

A series of labels are displayed on a graph. The labels indicate the value of the graph represented. You can specify a dynamic hint style, which shows the value label when the mouse moves over the desired section of the graph.

2D Line with shadow

3D Threshold

You can specify a threshold value and then draw a section area which represents that value and highlights it by cutting through all 3D objects.
