“We’ve used reporting tools in the past, and in the selection process, we evaluated the three market leaders. We did a proof of concept, and JReport installed rapidly and delivered quick results. Its Java-based architecture also fits well with our own. It didn’t take long to figure out JReport was the clear choice.”
– Mary Morgan, Vice President of Operations for Voyence, now a part of Dell EMC
Dell EMC is a global leader in developing and providing information infrastructure technology and solutions for a wide range of customers. One of the crucial aspects of EMC’s business is helping their customers manage their networks and ensuring that their services are in compliance with the regulatory requirements of the government they serve. EMC’s product, EMC Smarts Network Configuration Manager (formerly EMC VoyenceControl), helps organizations establish best practices, improve network infrastructure, provide network transparency, and demonstrate regulatory compliance.
EMC Smarts NCM is a network solution that enables change and configuration management and provides visibility into whether critical network resources are configured in compliance with government regulatory requirements (e.g., Sarbanes-Oxley, HIPAA, Gramm-Leach Bliley, etc).
One of the core values of EMC Smarts NCM lies in the product’s ability to assist the numerous levels in an organization address their specific roles related to regulatory compliance. The benefits scale from assisting executives with Sarbanes-Oxley Section 302 sign-off requirements to enabling IT managers with the ability for tracking approved or non-approved device changes. The product can audit over 15,000 devices for compliance and fix non-compliant configurations on over 1,000 devices at one time.
EMC Smarts NCM needed a data reporting feature that allows its users to easily display their compliance reports, identify problematic network configurations, and deliver reports based on user roles and accessibility.
The JReport Solution
JReport’s pure Java architecture and rich set of application programming interfaces (APIs) enable seamless integration and customization of reporting within EMC’s offering. The Smarts product scans the network and determines if there has been a violation of required network configurations. This information is then presented to end users through JReport. In this way, EMC Smarts users can demonstrate compliance in a single click, eliminating the need for penalties or time consuming and costly audit processes.
Because of JReport’s interactive dynamic HTML output, end users can manipulate specific reports to meet their needs. They can modify, filter, search, sort and drill down within reports to obtain data views relevant to their role in regulatory compliance.
The role-specific, easy-to-understand reports help organizations quickly uncover potential network misconfiguration issues identified by the EMC Smarts product. This allows organizations to address the problem in order to clearly demonstrate policy adherence to internal and external audit committees.
“We’ve used reporting tools in the past, and in the selection process, we evaluated the three market leaders”, said Mary Morgan, Vice President of Operations for Voyence (now part of Dell EMC). “We did a proof of concept, and JReport installed rapidly and delivered quick results. Its Java-based architecture also fits well with our own. It didn’t take long to figure out JReport was the clear choice.”
Results and Benefits
The Network Configuration Manager contains four integrated families of reports enabled by JReport: Executive-Level View, Compliance Management, Change Management and Inventory Management. Each family contains additional sets of individual reports that convey a full understanding of the network’s compliance-ready status.
Executive Level View – Offers a high level visibility and understanding regarding the network’s compliance status as well as all critical change initiatives and policies followed — or not followed.
Compliance Reporting – Provides critical information organizations must have to assess regulatory and non-regulatory (corporate) compliance mandates.
Change Management Reporting – Offers in-depth views into whether or not defined change and configuration management processes are working and being adhered to by IT personnel. Organizations can quickly understand who, what, where and when changes are made as well as whether those changes are approved or not approved.
Inventory Reporting – Comprehensive views organize EMC Smarts NCM’a rich network device knowledge into reports that enable organizations to reduce the cost of maintenance and ensure the consistency and ease of upgrades.
“If the network doesn’t meet compliance because of misconfigured devices, the business is at risk of violating government regulatory requirements,” said Dean Yao, Director of Marketing at Jinfonet. “Failing to meet these requirements can cause devastating consequences for an organization. By embedding JReport into EMC Smarts NCM, EMC can use easily understandable reports to view the compliance of their network. They can immediately identify whether or not they are at risk.”
